"The Power and Promise of Group Therapy"
November 15, 2024, 10:00 am to 11:30 am (EST)
Location: Elkhart Health and Aquatics, 200 E Jackson Blvd. Elkhart, IN
Hybrid available for this event (Zoom).
Speaker: Katie Steele, Ph.D., CGP, AGPA-F
Counseling Psychologist, Certified Group Psychotherapist, EMDRIA Approved Consultant, Fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association
Description: Group therapy has incredible potential for healing relational issues for clients, as well as providing a secure practice base for therapists. It is a more efficient and effective way to help more clients at a cost they can afford. Not only does it offer unique healing opportunities over and above what individual therapy can offer, but it provides a solid and steady income for therapists. So why aren’t more therapists offering groups in their practices and what might shift that?
1.5 CE's will be offered for Indiana licensed professionals (LCSW, LSW, LMHC, LMHCA, LMFT, LCAC).
Learning Objectives: After completing this training clinicians will be able to:
1. Identify the unique benefits of group therapy for clients and the ways group therapy can enhance a solo practice.
2. Identify strategies for screening potential group clients and overcoming resistances to joining a group.
3. Identify some of the ways cultural issues arise in group therapy and how to address them (and how to learn more).
4. List opportunities for training to be a group therapist.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Katie Steele has always identified herself as a relationship therapist. She helps clients recognize and heal the dysfunctional interpersonal patterns that developed early in life and now interfere in their present happiness. Katie knew she wanted to be a group therapist from her earliest days in graduate school at Notre Dame. She led four groups a week in her solo practice for 20 years and still leads two coed groups a week. Katie has been deeply involved in group training for herself and others since joining AGPA in 1997 and is passionate about spreading the word about the Power and Promise of Group Therapy.
